In collaboration with Dornbracht Atelier, Fabian Freytag has brought his very own vision of a tap to life. The renowned architect has combined exclusive materials such as amethyst, opal, and reddish marble to create a unique composition. Mineral structures meet precise geometric forms, creating an expressive interplay of craftsmanship, art, and functionality.
Inspired by Mediterranean architecture
Vibrant colours and unusual combinations of materials: Fabian Freytag’s work is characterised by theatrical extravagance. His designs embody classic beauty as well as a spirit of experimentation and lightness. The tap created by the popular, Hamburg-born architect also celebrates this unconventional style. Various elements come together here to form a playful, expressive whole: “The main inspiration for the tap was a trip to the Canary Islands,” says Fabian Freytag, explaining his approach. “There, I was particularly struck by how the colourful, Mediterranean architecture climbed up the hills. The stacked houses, with their rich colours and shapes, formed the original idea for the design.”
Playful, expressive design
A strikingly curved spout now emerges from a cube of rhodochrosite, with the earthy red powder coating harmonising perfectly with the pink-hued natural stone. The glossy finish lends the tap a powerful visual presence and creates a deliberate contrast to the exquisite selection of natural and precious stones. The handles combine several different stone geometries: on the left is a cylindrical piece of Rosso Alicante – a reddish marble – arranged with green and black marble. On the right is a spherical element made of amethyst, beneath which lies a base of blue quartz and a narrow plinth of Crema Valencia, a beige-coloured natural stone.
Elaborate handcrafted work
This sculptural masterpiece was crafted through intricate handcrafting at the factory in Iserlohn, with the stones being worked by the gemstone jewellery workshop Pauly Carvings in Idar-Oberstein, Germany. With Dornbracht Atelier, the manufacturer offers the opportunity to realise tailored solutions starting at one piece: this gives architects and designers maximum creative freedom to express their own style and design unique, one-of-a-kind fittings. Fabian Freytag also made use of these creative possibilities: “I love exploring the unexpected and letting the most diverse shapes, colours, and materials clash with one another,” said the architect. “Dornbracht Atelier has proved to be a fantastic platform for creating something new and radically vibrant.”
